Sesame seed is considered to be the oldest oilseed crop known to humanity. The genus has many species, and most are wild.Sesame is crop that is grown for the oil in its seed. It is found in tropical and subtropical areas of Africa, Asia and South America. Compared to similar crops, such as peanuts, soybean, and rapeseed, the seeds of sesame are believed to have the most oil. Sesame seeds are also rich sources of protein, vitamins, and antioxidants.
People use sesame oil in place of other cooking oils to treat high blood pressure. Sesame is sometimes used for diabetes, high cholesterol, heart disease, and many other conditions.
Beside oil extraction, Sesame seeds are used to make authentic dishes and confections such as Tahini and halwa sweets. It is also used in the cosmetics and pharmaceutical fields.
Seasame Types
White Sesame
This type is characterized by gradation of the outer color of the seed from white to yellowish white, provided that the colored seeds shall not exceed 5%.
Mixed Sesame
In this type, the colored seeds shall not exceed a maximum of 25% compared to the white – yellowish white color
Brown Sesame
Brown sesame seeds are known for its high oil content. In this variety, the outer color of the seeds varies from golden to brown, as it contains 26 % or more of colored seeds
Sudan Sesame production:
Sudan Produces an average of 350,000 tons/year. Cultivated in the states of Gedarif, Jazira, Blue Nile and the western region.
Types of Sesame Seeds
